Jean-Louis Etienne has always liked rising to new challenges, especially when they combine adventure and scientific objectives. Adventures are the stuff that dreams are made of. They reveal a new way of looking at things, especially to young people, and can be a very effective means to convey scientific knowledge that in other forms sometimes falls on unreceptive ears.
Jean-Louis Etienne admits quite openly that he is not a researcher, he is just a traveller and explorer who, from one expedition to the next, has managed to gain the confidence of and forge ties with the scientific community.
During those past expeditions, Jean-Louis Etienne demonstrated -- without falling prey to despair – that he has a lucid vision of the state of our planet. By flying across the Arctic ice pack in a balloon he intends to add yet another voice to the growing conviction that there is an urgent need to protect one of the most sensitive zones in the Northern Hemisphere.

For “Generali Arctic Observer” is not just an expedition; it has a number of scientific aims as well.

For the first time, an observation platform will be able to gather and transmit real-time data on the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere above the Arctic Ocean.

This data-acquisition campaign will also be an opportunity to test, under extreme conditions, miniature data probes that will have multiple technological and scientific applications.

The Earth’s magnetic field is constantly evolving, causing the magnetic North Pole to change places every year. During the last few years, the speed of this displacement has increased significantly, rising from 10-20 km/year to 60-80 km/year. This increase in displacement seems to coincide with an overall weakening of the Earth’s magnetic field. Scientists have so far been unable to explain this phenomenon, and an accurate set of measurements of the magnetic field could perhaps allow the scientific community to confirm or reject some of their working hypotheses.
