In 1986, I was the first man to reach the North Pole on foot, alone, pulling my sled for 63 days in temperatures that reached -52°C. In 1989-90, I crossed Antarctica by dog sled: 6,300 km, seven months of expedition, the longest crossing of Antarctica ever accomplished. As a tireless defender of the planet, I discuss here my travels, my projects to study the Southern Ocean with Polar Pod, and I explain how the polar regions play a vital role for the earth and its climate.
