It was Haroun Tazieff who revealed to me the existence of Erebus, an active volcano on Ross Island in Antarctica. On two occasions the famous volcanologist had attempted to descend to the bottom of the crater to analyze the gases escaping from this boiling lava lake. This is the challenge that we, in turn, attempted to meet. The first challenge was to move Antarctica through the compact ice pack of the Ross Sea, and then to bring the equipment up to the top of the volcano at an altitude of 3,480 m. At the bottom of the crater we could finally make out the glow of the incandescent lava that awaited us.
